Tiny Hearts Friendship Bracelet (Smooth)

This simple design of hearts also comes with a frilly variety (with decorative picots). It can also be used as a trim. The pattern is worked by doing half hearts in a chain for whatever length is as desired, and then coming back the other way working the other half of the hearts. Although the pattern can be worked with two threads of the same color, this makes the heart shapes less visible.

    Requires:
  • Two shuttles
  • Two threads in contrasting or complimentary colors (pictured examples use size 20.)

If you are doing a friendship bracelet, leave fairly long ends and don't work them in, so they can be used to tie the bracelet on.

    Abbreviations:
  • Numbers indicate double-stitches.
  • -   picot
  • =   join
    First Half Heart:
  • Ring 3-4-3
  • Flip tatting over to reverse side.
  • Chain 13=-3
  • Switch colors
  • Flip tatting over to reverse side.

Because you are attaching the chain to a ring from the underside, the knots will have a tendency to want to twist about to face inward. Don't worry about this. When you attach the chain from the next heart to the picot immediately following the join, it will straighten out your chain.

    Additional Half Hearts:
  • Ring 3-4-3
  • Flip tatting over to reverse side.
  • Chain 3=10=-3
  • Switch colors
  • Flip tatting over to starting side.

    Last Half Heart:
  • Ring 3-4-3
  • Flip tatting over to reverse side.
  • Chain 3=10=3

When the chain of alternating half hearts is the desired length, I like to stop at the last point, and do a ring of 14 in the other color, to keep the last heart looking nice and pointed, and to provide a place for the strings to be tied to.

    Second Half of all Hearts except the First:
  • Chain 3==10-3
  • Join second half chain to the threads between the ring and the first half chain.
  • Switch colors

    Second Half of First Heart:
  • Chain 3==13
  • Join second half chain to the threads between the ring and the first half chain.
  • Tie off your threads, and cut them to match the starting threads.
