Usually attains a height of 60 to <height>80</height> feet, diameter of 24-<diameter>36</diameter> inches. Sometimes larger. Branches droop at the ends, has a narrow open crown. Trunk tapers rapidly. Bark on young stems is smooth light brown. On old trunks it's divided into ridges, not so roufh as the black oak and not as flat as the eastern red oak. Bark is often mottled or spotted with frey, the inner bark is reddish.
