Most unusually, Marquis deliberately sought out the Brotherhood and volunteered to become a member, offering them his skills as the highest rated navigator and pilot in the private academy for children of Galactic Marines he attended, and the information necessary to take the Galatic Marine Cruiser the Celestial Mary off guard, and unarmed. Normally very suspicious of volunteers, Captain Shaw seemed to feel some kind of kinship with Jean Marquis, and took him up on his offer. Marquis was not assigned to the crew of the captured Celestial Mary (renamed the Penzance) but when the Revenge next captured a ship, renaming it the Blackbeared, Marquis was assigned to that crew, and elected Captain.
